(Note: Hal is a secondary character in the series, and there isn’t really much we know about her. While some of the facts are solid, details about her past and relationships are basically free to interpret. I’m just giving a piece of my own mind here.)

Background:

Halle was part of an investigation team, known as the SPK. It was a group formed especially for the purpose of stoping Kira, a world-known killer. She worked for Near along with two other members: Lester and Gevanni.

Although she seemed to be loyal to the group, there was more to it than the eye could see.

The main reason behind her will to join the investigation had it’s roots way back, when someone who she cared strongy for got killed by the mentioned murderer. She was aware that the person behind the killing was probably not the same as the one she pursued at the time, but the thirst for revenge still stayed. She figured that she didn’t want anyone else to suffer the same fate as her.

One day, Mello – a former mafia leader – broke into her appartment, forcing her to cooperate. She was obviously considered as one of the (not many) links to Near, and supposedly an easy target because of her gender.

She learned that the blond attended to the same orphenage as Near did, and was second in line to being L’s succesor. He dedicated his life to surpass the pale boy (ever since they were kids, there was some kind of rivalry involved) and he’d literally do anything to achieve his goals.

Forced at first, she figured that she actually didn’t mind helping Mello after she got to know him a bit better. Although his ways of doing things were far from questionable at times, he and Hal basically shared the same goal – bring justice upon Kira. She started to leak information from the investigation group to the blond, trusting that he would use it for the right reasons. It even became a profitable link later on, when Near found out about her double-game. She ended up as a mediator between the two boys.

Halle and Mello ended up becoming more involved with eachother, despite the fact that there were probably no feelings between them (not on Mello’s side, at least). One could say that they were simply using oneanother when needed.

And although Hal never admitted it, she did develop some feelings for the blond.

Their relationship didn’t last long, however, as Mello ended up dead a bit more than a month later, shortly after he kidnapped Kira’s spokeswoman. Because of his actions, Near was able to establish a plan, which – in th end – succeeded in leading to Kira’s downfall.

The SPK got disbanded, and Hal got hired as Near’s bodyguard – or actually as someone similar to a nanny (since the boy wasn’t very skilled in leading everyday life by himself). She looked after him for the next three years, and became really attached to him, but not in a romantical way.

But, regretfully – as the fragile boy he was – Near fell victim to a serious illness at a young age, and Halle ended up being all alone.

Other interesting facts:
- She is a former CIA agent.
- “Lidner” isn’t her real name; it was given as a safety measure against Kira.

Personality:

Halle had a really strong sense of justice, but that managed to change during the last few years. She figured that the world got corrupted, and justice lost it’s meaning after Kira’s reign. She doesn’t mind breaking the law, as long as it’s for the right reasons, and no serious harm is done to anybody.

She’s normally a calm and composed person, but she can also lose it at times, especially when someone really insists on getting under her skin. She is also considerate of and tolerant towards others. Conflicts and misunderstandings are something she’s seriously not fond of, and she always tries to look for any means of solving them, even if she’s not directly involved.

Basically, if you’re looking for someone you could talk to – about anything at all – Hal would probably be a good choice.
